PROOFREADING-- Request this service if you have a finished manuscript, but want someone to review it in search of typos, grammar, spelling, and other minor problems. I would write corrections directly on your manuscript, so be sure to double space. I would NOT make major formatting suggestions or improve your wording. Price: $30/hour, at rate of 8-10 pages of prose/hour for industry standard page (i.e. double spaced, 1-inch margins, 250 words pp). The service can be done by mail. It does not include an in-person or telephone consultation (see below).
(Prices may vary based on level of writing)
EDITING/REVISING– In this case, you have a finished essay, story, or set of poems (or mostly finished), but may need help with form and organization. I would review your draft for consistency, clarity, flow, and purpose. I would do MINOR re-writing and re-phrasing, and suggest places where you need more work. Remember to double-space and leave 1 inch margins so I have space to mark corrections and make comments. Note: I would NOT change content. I would make notes suggesting changes (e.g. “confusing,” or “this section needs to be put earlier in text,”). For less finished work, I might have to speak with you for clarifications, and I would suggest a consultation (see below). Price: "$40/hour at a rate of roughly 5-7 pages of prose/hour for industry standard page (i.e. double spaced, 1-inch margins, 250 words pp). The service can be done by mail and/or email. It does not include an in-person consultation (see below)
CONSULTATION-- Request this option if your essay or story of up to fifteen industry-standard pages (i.e. 250 words pp double spaced), or set of 3-5 poems might be in its early stages, and you are not sure how to improve it. In this case, I would first study your work closely, focusing both on what is effective and on what would make it stronger (considering, for example, content, word choice, rhythm, economy, and clarity.) After working independently with your writing, we would schedule a telephone conference for 60 minutes. See below for more details on a prose or a poetry consultation.
For Prose Consultaions: For prose of more than fifteen industry-standard pages, we would start with a phone conference of up to a 45-minutes to discuss your project. Then you will mail me your work, and I will carefully look it over and present you with a summary of my general impressions and a suggested package, and you can decide what fits your goals and budget. This initial review costs $55, which will be deducted from the total cost of your consultation should you decide to move forward. Total cost will vary, depending on the length of your project and the complexity of your needs.
For Poetry Consultations: For packets of 3-5 poems (up to 150 lines total). For this service, you would send me your work for review about a week ahead of time, and I would prepare detailed, line-by-line feedback to discuss each poem in depth during the one-hour phone conference.
* The cost of this type of service as a one-time consultation is $145. There's a 20% discount for 3-5 packet sessions completed in six months. There's a 30% discount for 6 or more packet sessions completed in six months.
POETRY MANUSCRIPT PACKAGES
Once you request this service, we will set up a phone call (up to 45-minutes) to discuss your project in detail. If you would like to move forward, you will mail me your work, and I will carefully look over your collection of 10-25 pages (one poem per page), and present you with a summary of my general impressions and a suggested package and price, and you can decide what fits your goals and budget. This initial review of your collection costs $55, which will be deducted from the total cost of your package if you decide to move forward with me. * If, after talking to me and after my review of your work, we agree that a packet program (see above) would be more appropriate, I will apply the $55 to the $145 packet price.
The basic chapbook manuscript package ($325 minus the initial $55 fee) would include poem sequencing of up to 25 pages, general comments on your poems' strengths and needs, general suggestions on approaches to revision, suggestions for poem titles, and suggestions, if needed, on overall manuscript formatting, plus a 60-minute phone conference.
In-Depth chapbook manuscript package ($550 minus the initial $55 fee) would include all of the above, plus careful, line-by-line feedback on up to 20 poems (I will write on your manuscript. Please don't send me your only copy!), suggestions on where you might need new poems to fill in gaps (if there are any gaps), and up to 2 1/2 hours of phone conferencing (can be split into multiple conferences, depending on your schedule and needs)
Adjustments to either of the above packages can be made (e.g. line-by-line edits of more than 20 poems) -- just let me know what you're looking for.
Other-- please use the contact page to let me know your questions or what service you might want.
